Malcolm Butler is the best corner guard for the team

We take a look back at Malcolm Butler’s 2016 season and offer our predictions for 2017.

There̵#8217;ve been two major stories surrounding the Patriots this past week: the re-signing of linebacker/co-captain Dont’a Hightower to a four-year pact and cornerback Malcolm Butler’s open flirtation with the New Orleans Saints.
While Hightower, too, paid visits to a few other NFL clubs before ultimately deciding to remain with New England, Butler is in a different situation and his future remains uncertain.

The New England Patriots announced that they have signed restricted free agent CB Malcolm Butler and exclusive rights free agent TE Matt Lengel. Terms of the contracts were not announced. In addition, the Patriots released OL Tre’ Jackson.

The former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl hero is now under contract for 2017 at a salary of $3.91 million.
But, the signing also, as ESPN alluded to, opens the door for a potential Butler trade. The cornerback visited the Saints earlier this offseason and New Orleans has made it quite clear it still has interest in the fourth-year cover man.

It is known by all the contribution of Malcolm Butler during his 3 years with the Patriots. A player who came as a free agent rookie and became the best cornerback of the team, a key piece and hero of Super Bowl XLIX where he was the author of the interception 20 seconds from the end that meant winning the fourth championship for New England.

According to a report from the Associated Press, Patriots restricted free agent cornerback Malcolm Butler is set to visit the Saints later this week.

I understand Malcolm Butler’s representative is a lawyer with no experience with professional athletes. Do you think the situation with Malcolm Butler elite jersey would have turned out any different if he had an agent with experience?

I know next to nothing about Butler’s agent Derek Simpson but I haven’t seen or read anything that would lead me to believe he’s been a problem. Butler is a restricted free agent and therefore has every right to talk to other teams and gauge his value. To this point Simpson has given no indication that Butler intends to hold out or miss any time, so I’m not sure why anyone believes the agent has done anything wrong. He believes his client is worth more money than the Patriots have offered – and since we can only go by reports and don’t have the information with any level of certainty – and there’s no reason to suggest he’s wrong. So to answer your question I’d say Simpson is doing everything he can to keep Butler’s options open, which is probably a wise course of action. It seems Malcolm Butler and the Patriots are on the same page once again. According to an ESPN blog post, Butler is back in town for offseason workouts with the Patriots, after it seemed he might be shipped out of New England earlier this offseason.
“Disappointment over not receiving a lucrative long-term extension won’t be a factor in his making a full-fledged investment to the club in 2017,” the story goes on to assert.

It’s pretty common for it to be said that someone was born for a certain job. But, when it comes to Patriots sixth-round pick Ted Karras, that description is almost a literal characterization.

Rookie WR Malcolm Mitchell recently made a guest appearance on’s web video series “Magic Moments” with magician John Duke Logan. Mitchell was so awed by Logan’s tricks that he showed the video to fellow rookie Jacoby Brissett. The QB was skeptical, though, but it just so happened that Logan, a web assistant, was in the locker room at the time and began performing tricks for the two players. Soon, they were joined by rookie o-lineman Ted Karras, veteran running back LeGarrette Blount, and several members of the media.

The latest came on Monday when Jamie Collins was sent packing

The New England Patriots announced today that they have traded LB Jamie Collins to the Cleveland Browns for a conditional draft pick.

Collins, 27, is in his fourth NFL season after joining New England as a second round draft pick (52nd overall) out of Southern Mississippi in the 2013 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 250-pounder, has played in 50 NFL games with 41 starts and has accumulated 280 total tackles, 10 1/2 sacks, five interceptions, 16 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown, one blocked field goal and one blocked extra point.

Wednesday morning at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine Brown was much more interested in talking about the former – a midseason trade for linebacker Jamie Collins – than he was the latter – the much speculated potential interest Cleveland could have in dealing for Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

The latest came on Monday when Jamie Collins was sent packing. While the suddenness of those moves always catch the players off guard, Brady understands the nature of the business and realizes no one is immune to the situation.

It was a rare Tuesday full house today on PFW In Progress with Erik Scalavino on the show to cover the Patriots bye week media availability. The show began with a bang as the guys immediately dove into the shocking trade of Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins to the Cleveland Browns.

Try to have an open mind on this. Has Bill lost his mind? He got rid of Logan Mankins and our line sucked, He supported the idea of changing the extra point and then our kicker missed the extra point in the AFC championship game last year and we lost. He chose to give the Jets the ball in the beginning of overtime last year and we lost (all we needed was one more win to get home-field advantage for the playoffs which we didn’t get and lost in the playoffs), he got rid of Chandler Jones and Dominique Easley and now our defensive line sucks and now he got rid of possibly the best linebacker in the league not named Luke Kuechly in Jamie Collins. The New England Patriots announced on Monday that Linebacker, Jamie Collins, will leave the club in the direction of Cleveland. The patriots receive a conditional draft pick for the athletic defender.

Collins, 27, is in his fourth NFL season after being compelled by the New England Patriots jerseys in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2013 (a total of 52 players). The 1.90 meter big and 113 kilogram heavy Collins ran so far 50 times as NFL professional, of which 41 times from the beginning. In his previous career, Collins recorded 280 tackles, 10.5 Sacks, five interceptions, 16 defending passes, ten forced fumbles, four Fumble Recoveries, a blocked field goal, and a blocked Extra Point.

Bill Belichick and the Patriots have been quite active thus far during the offseason. They’ve signed three free agents, acquired three more via trades and have been involved in more rumors as well.

One of the latest reports indicates the Patriots would be the most likely landing spot for Darrelle Revis.

Almost a year to day from when he signed with the Patriots, cornerback Darrelle Revis is headed back to the Jets. This news came from his agent Neil Schwartz, who tweeted the news that his client agreed to terms with his original team.

Revis is coming off an embarrassingly-horrific season with the Jets in which he was reportedly out of shape and played as poorly as ever. New York cut him this offseason, but remains on the hook for $6 million in guaranteed money that, thanks to contract offset language, would be lessened by whatever deal Revis were to sign with a new team.

In the spring of 2013 Bill Belichick oversaw what he termed a “re-do” of the wide receiver position in New England.
Two years later, and with seemingly even higher stakes, Belichick appears to be doing the same with the cornerback position.
Darrelle Revis returned “home” to the Jets on the opening day of free agency, taking a guaranteed $39 million to join Gang Green’s as yet unfulfilled hopes of unseating New England atop the AFC East and winning a Super Bowl for the first time since the only Roman Numeral needed for the world’s biggest game was an “I.”

ESPN has reported all along that Darrelle Revis’ future likely would be with either the Patriots or Jets.

As free agency opened at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted that, “Sense out of New England is that Darrelle Revis is likely to be a Jet, per sources. NE still will make final push. Not over yet.”

Revis was expected to hit free agency when the Patriots reportedly chose not to pick up his bonus for this season that would have resulted in a 2015 cap charge in New England of $25 million.

The New England Patriots announced that they have signed CB Stephon Gilmore as an unrestricted free agent from the Buffalo Bills. Terms of the contract were not announced.

Gilmore, 26, is a veteran of five NFL seasons with Buffalo after originally entering the NFL as a first-round draft pick (10th overall) out of South Carolina in the 2012 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder, has played in 68 games with 66 starts and accumulated 198 total tackles, 14 interceptions and 68 passes defensed. Last season, Gilmore started in all 15 games that he played and finished with 42 total tackles and a career-best of five interceptions to earn his first Pro Bowl invitation.

I find it perplexing and disappointing that the Pats have not rewarded Malcolm Butler and Dont’a Hightower for their contributions. Butler is a hero (SB 49) and has made steady improvement. Hightower is a team leader and a beacon of versatility. Giving Stephon Gilmore a monster contract and not paying two vital defensive players is good for team chemistry? What are your thoughts on this development?

A day after the Patriots reportedly acquired Colts tight end Dwayne Allen, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted the Patriots will sign cornerback Stephon Gilmore in free agency.

Many years the Patriots are content to let other teams make big splashes as the new league year kicks off. This is not one of those years.

The 27-year-old Gilmore was the 10th overall pick out of South Carolina in 2012 and spent his entire career with the Bills. The 6-0, 190-pound Gilmore made the Pro Bowl last season with Buffalo and had a career-high five interceptions last season. In his five seasons he has 14 picks in 68 career games, 66 of which were starts. He’s missed 12 games due to injury in his career.

Stephon Gilmore was also selected by his former Buffalo Bills teammates as their representative. On the field, Stephon returned from major shoulder surgery at the end of the 2015 season with a strong season. Off the field, he has dedicated his time in both Buffalo and in his home state of South Carolina. From hosting clinics to raising awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association, Stephon is an example of strength, dedication and courage in the NFL.

Darrelle Revis wore his traditional 24 for his only Super Bowl-winning season in Foxborough.
Now, the Boston Herald notes, high-priced free agent addition Stephon Gilmore will strive to continue the tradition of the number in regards to elite cornerback play. Gilmore also wore 24 in his time with the Bills.

Grissom, 22, was selected by the Patriots in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft with the 97th selection overall out of Oklahoma. The 6-foot-4, 252-pounder, played in 39 games with 11 starts and registered 88 tackles, eight sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Last season, he played in 10 games with seven starts and tallied 39 total tackles and 3 ½ sacks. Grissom was named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention as a senior in 2014.

See how Geneo Grissom and Joe Andruzzi spread kindness across Boston on Wednesday.

Geneo Grissom has it all. At 6-3, 262 and a 4.81 40 time, he has the size, speed, strength and quickness to excel in the NFL. What Grissom doesn’t have – at least during his college days at Oklahoma – is a position.

The Patriots selected Geneo Grissom, a defensive end from Oklahoma in the third round (97th overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft.

You know how the Patriots crave versatility, right?

Since joining the Patriots in 2012, the former college defensive end has carved out a nice role for himself as a dependable blocker in New England’s rushing attack and a sometimes target of QB Tom Brady in the passing game. Recently, his efforts in the backfield helped open up holes for 1,000-yard rusher LeGarrette Blount en route to the Patriots’ fifth Super Bowl championship. Brady once called Develin “the best fullback in the NFL.”

Two other players worth mentioning – and watching – in the coming weeks and months: wide receiver Austin Carr out of Northwestern, and tight end Jacob Hollister from Wyoming. Not that others won’t have equal chances to make it. They will.

Given the current depth chart situation, I’m going to say that linebacker, defensive back, and tight end might be the positions with the best chances to stick. I’ll be paying particular attention this spring and summer to linebacker Harvey Langi, for whom the Patriots reportedly overpaid to win his signature on a contract, beating out a number of other clubs who were interested in him. But I’m also curious to see which unheralded names might stand out in a positive way over the next few months, because someone always does.

Based on signing money, the early favorite to land a coveted spot on the 2017 New England Patriots jersey china might have to be linebacker Harvey Langi of Brigham Young. The Patriots basically paid him like a draft pick, giving him a six-figure base salary plus a $15K signing bonus as incentive to keep him from going elsewhere. Langi is versatile – he can play inside, come off the edge and even fill in at fullback. You know how the Patriots crave versatility, right?

Just before Saturday’s fourth round kicked off the Patriots announced they had made yet another deal, this one with Kansas City to acquire tight end James O’Shaughnessy and a sixth-round pick (216 overall) for a fifth-round pick (183 overall). The 6-4, 245-pound O’Shaughnessy entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick in 2015 out of Illinois State. He has played in 23 regular-season games, totaling eight catches for 86 yards for the Chiefs. He also performed on special team, totaling 8 tackles in 2016.

Picking up right where they left off on Friday night, Bill Belichick and his Patriots got a jump on the final day of the 2017 NFL Draft. Before Round 4’s selections began, the Super Bowl champs swung a deal with Kansas City to acquire third-year veteran tight end James O’Shaughnessy and the Chiefs’ 216th overall pick in the sixth round. Restricted free agent running back Mike Gillislee officially became a Patriot on Monday after his former team, the Buffalo Bills, declined to match New England’s two-year contract offer. The Bills had until 4 p.m. Eastern today to make a decision after the Patriots extended the offer to Gillislee last week. Buffalo announced its decision at the last possible moment.

Develin returned to the lineup after missing all of 2015 with a broken leg and provided a physical presence in front of LeGarrette Blount, who turned in a career-year with 1,161 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns. The 28-year-old Develin will enter his fifth season after a college career as a defensive end at Brown. His professionalism and leadership will be welcomed back in Foxborough.

The Super Bowl LI victory celebrations didn’t stop when the duck boats rolled up to City Hall more than a month ago. Your Patriots have been doing victory tours to their hometowns and alma maters, and these towns and cities across the country have welcomed their hometown heroes with parades and various honors.

The 28-year-old Develin was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on Thursday before he and the Patriots came to an apparent agreement today.

Wisconsin’s latest running back prospect is Corey Clement, a potential mid- or late-round pick in next month’s draft. As he works through the Combine process, Clement was asked about his relationship with White, his teammate early in his career in Madison.
